5 Things to do while preparing for your Arrival into Canada as an International Student

Congratulations on acquiring your visa!!

You should be preparing for your arrival in Canada. Here are a few things you need to take note of before you arrive in Canada as an international student.  Mind you it’s not just about getting the Visa but you need to consider all these things which will prepare you for your arrival.

      1. Your Flight Ticket – One of the first things you need to note to do is getting your flight tickets. It’s advisable to get your flight tickets way ahead of time before your departure date. This makes your flight ticket less expensive than when you are getting your ticket close to your departure date. Do note how many bags you need to bring along with you on the flight in order to avoid paying extra charges for excess luggage.

        1. What to pack – Begin to pack ahead of time, Especially for clothing, it’s important to know how to pack when coming into Canada. If you are coming during winter, you will need to avoid packing light clothing since it’s cheaper to get clothes here. Pack more warm clothes since you will really need them and because they take up a lot of space in your traveling bag. Only pack necessities which you will really need from your home country. Also note that there are some items that are not allowed inside Canada due to the border services.

          1. Accommodation – Accommodation can take the biggest percentage of your budget. If you have family or friends here in Canada who can host you, that is great. You can stay with family for your first few months before looking for alternative accommodation. If you do not have family or friends, you can book an Airbnb for about a week or 2 while you use the time to get permanent accommodation.

            1. Convert Currency into USD – If you are coming from a country where it’s easy to transfer funds from your home bank account to a Canadian bank account then that’s great. If not, you will need to convert your funds into USD because you can declare up to USD 10,000 at the airport. So you can bring this much, and then open a bank account once you arrive and then deposit the funds into your bank account.

              1. Lastly it’s important to spend time with your family and close friends because you are traveling to start a new life in Canada. Knowing you will be away for a long time, it’s necessary to spend time with your family and friends and while you get into Canada try to keep in touch with them as well.
